Deputy PM and Finance Minister Simeon Djankov has promised all-out support for investments in cultural tourism during a visit to Northeastern Bulgaria.

On Friday and Saturday, Djankov was in the city of Shumen as well as in the capitals of the First Bulgarian Empire Pliska (capital of Bulgaria in 680-893 AD) and Veliki Preslav (capital in 893-971 AD) and the village of Madara, the site of the world renowned rock-cut Madara Horseman.

"For me, the investment in cultural and historical tourism is one of the best investments. It is crucial that we create proper infrastructure in this triangle of Shumen, Pliska, and Veliki Preslav, this is the cradle of Bulgaria," Djankov declared.

His visit to the top historical sites was connected with the drafting of a National Program for the Development of Cultural, Historical and Religious Tourism.

"We hope that in 2011 these places will look very differently for tourists and students," the Finance Minister said announcing that a BGN 1.1 M project funded with EU money will be realized in 2011 to improve the infrastructure of the National Historical and Archaeological Reserve at Pliska.

"We must attract tourists to our medieval sites, improve the value of tourism, and preserve the Bulgarian historical heritage," Djankov commented as he walked through the first Bulgarian capital on the Balkans, Pliska.

He admitted that upon his previous visit to Pliska in August 2011 he even got lost trying to find the ancient city on his way from Varna.
