EU pollution cleanup experts will arrive Monday in Hungary to help limit the aftermath of the toxic sludge spill, the European Commission has announced.
The five EU experts will be sent from Austria, Belgium, France, Germany and Sweden. Their help has been requested by Hungary last week.
The experts will go directly to the place of the spill and will help evaluate the damage on farmlands, groundwaters, flora and fauna. They will also give expert advices on the best options for limiting the consequences of the accident and cleaning the area from the toxic sludge.
"Disasters like this do not stop at national borders and a combined European response can help deliver the most effective assistance possible," said Kristalina Georgieva, the Bulgarian EU Commissioner responsible for crisis response.
The spill has reached the Marcal River and has been said to have extinguished all life there. The mud then reached the Danube River on Thursday, but Hungarian officials claimed that the pH level in the river was normal and there was no danger of pollution.
On Sunday, however, Hungary's PM Viktor Orban announced it was "very likely" that the wall of the reservoir of the alumina plant would collapse, releasing a new wave of the toxic red sludge.
