Bulgaria's Transport Minister Alexander Tsvetkov will meet next week with the Greek Ambassador regarding the frequent incidents with Bulgarian trucks and their drivers, conducting transportation on Greek territory.

The two will discuss the measures, taken by Greece for the protection of Bulgarians.

On Wednesday, the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry sent a note to the Greek embassy to Sofia, asking the Greek police to immediately interfere, in order to prevent the acts of abuse against Bulgarian drivers and their trucks.

Minister Tsvetkov met on Thursday with injured drivers from the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv and assured them that the state will approach the EU if the Greek government does not take adequate measures against the strikers' violence.

The Greek drivers have been protesting against the government's austerity measures and have "expressed their emotions by damaging Bulgarian cars, including arson, physical attacks, tires shredding, windows and mirrors breaking," as stated in a letter from the Bulgarian Freight Drivers Union to the Foreign Ministry.

Representatives of the union have explained the violence with the fact that Greek transport companies are able to receive Bulgarian license and registration and conduct transportations on Greek territory.

The drivers have also announced that they plan to initiate a protest in front of all border crossing points between Bulgaria and Greece, as a sign of solidarity with the drivers who have become "victims of the atrocities of the strikers and the carelessness of the Greek state."

Minister Tsvetkov has stated that he would support the actions of the Bulgarians as long as they do not violate the EU legislation.

He also pointed out that a hot line has been open and is available for all freight drivers, who have become victims of the Greek strikers' violence.
