Home Sweet Home: The Reality of Housing in Bulgaria Revealed
New data from the National Statistical Institute (NSI) sheds light on the housing landscape in Bulgaria, painting a picture of the majority of Bulgarians residing in older homes.
Bulgaria's Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov has claimed the media had twisted his statement that the Bulgarian Roma community was "an incubator generating crime."
"Do not overexpose something I did not mean," said Tsvetanov.
The statement of the Interior Minister came as a response to France's expulsion of Romanian and Bulgarian Roma to their homelands.
Bulgaria was the only EU member state whose government would not protest against the controversial policy and even tried to justify it.
On Thursday, Tsvetanov explained that the problem comes from the concentration of a large number of unemployed and uneducated Roma at certain places.
The minister also promised to search for mechanisms for the integration and education of Roma.
"You all know which are the problems, connected to the conventional crime rate in the small towns," Tsvetanov said and reminded the case of two old women who died after a group of Roma entered their homes to rob them.
He also claimed that the Bulgarian government was "extremely concerned" about the unsolved problem with the integration of the Roma community in the country.
