The Bulgarian nation will undergo an online census for the first time in September 2010, the National Statistics Institute has announced.
From 8:00 am on Sept. 1 until 8:00 am on Sept. 7 all Bulgarian citizens, living on the territory of the country, will be able to register themselves and their families in an online national census.
The Information system “Census” will be closed after that time and from 8:00 am on Sept. 7 until 8:00 pm on Sept. 14 about 200 enumerators will visit the homes of more than 35 000 people in the regions of the cities Veliko Tarnovo, Pleven and Stara Zagora.
The trial census will include about 0,5% of the Bulgarian nation.
The National Statistics Institute has explained that the goal is to test the tools, the methods, the census map and the Information system “Census”.
The actual census of the Bulgarian nation will be carried out in March 2011.
The first ever census in Bulgaria was performed in 1880 in the Principality of Bulgaria and in 1884 in Eastern Rumelia, the two administratively autonomous provinces in the Ottoman Empire by the Treaty of Berlin in 1878.
After that census were performed in 1887, 1892, 1900, 1905, 1910, 1920, 1926, 1934, 1946, 1956, 1965, 1975, 1985, 1992 and 2001.
The last census registered that the Bulgarian nation consisted of 7 928 901 people.
