The Bulgarian National Veterinary-Medical Service confirmed Tuesday that the anthrax sample from the village of Brestovene was positive.

The anthrax alarm was raised after six sheep have died in the village of Brestovene, near the northern Bulgarian city of Razgrad.

Although on Monday the Razgrad Regional Inspectorate on Safety and Control of Public Health announced that the sample sent to the laboratory in Shumen did not confirm anthrax, on Tuesday, the National Veterinary-Medical Service has announced otherwise.

All possible measures have been taken against the spreading of the disease. Despite the six sheep that died, there have not been registered other cases in the village of animals, infected with anthrax.

Veterinary doctors started to vaccinate herbivores on Friday. Until now, 950 out of all 1300 animals have been vaccinated in the village of Brestovene. The places to which the animals had access to have also been vaccinated.

Anthrax is a highly contagious disease, usually transmitted on people through contact with meat, blood or skin of a dead animal that has been infected.

In compliance with the state prevention program, the vaccination against anthrax is carried out every year in all the towns and villages in the country, in which there has been a registered case of anthrax disease over the past 30 years.

In locations where anthrax was registered in the past 10 years, the vaccination is carried out twice a year.

Vaccination has not been carried out in locations near the village of Brestovene because there has not been registered an anthrax case over the past 30 years.
