Police in Cyprus believe a body found floating off the coast of Ayia Napa in the Famagusta district belongs to a Bulgarian man reported lost at sea near Limassol earlier this month, local media said.
“The clothes on the body led us to believe it could be Georgi Salabanov, 40, who disappeared on August 8 around 90 kilometres west of where he was found,” a police spokesman said, as cited by Cyprus Mail.
Preliminary examination of the body did not show signs of foul play.
State pathologist Nicolas Charalambous said the body bore external injuries, which could have been caused by fish or something else during the13 days it was in the sea.
But he stressed that the cause of death will only be determined by the post mortem, which will be carried out at Larnaca hospital.
Until then “we cannot definitively say what exactly happened,” Charalambous said.
The body was spotted by people on a boat at around noon.
Salabanov was a crew member of the Abalone yacht and had been reported missing by the captain on the evening of August 8.
