Scores of Bulgarian nature-lovers gathered Saturday in the beautiful Rila Mountain to clean the area of the Seven Rila Lakes, the Bulgarian National Radio, BNR reported.
The cleaning is organized by environmental NGOs in partnership with the Directorate National Park Rila.
Filka Sekulova from “For the Earth” Association told BNR over 50 tons of waste has been collected so far during similar actions in the mountains of Rila, Pirin, Strandzha, and the central parts of the Balkan Range (Stara Planina).
According to Sekulova, things in Bulgaria are changing for the better and there is hope because people begin to remove their own waste. 3-4 years ago, in an action in Stara Planina, the environmentalists removed 7 tons of waste while in the latest one, in the same area, they had to haul only 2-3 tons.
There are still old dumpsites near mountain cabins that need to be cleaned, and fewer people leave their trash behind, the activist said, adding the most important message the NGOs want to send now is that hikers must take their waste in their backpacks and not leave it around the cabin.
