The leader of the Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP, Sergey Stanishev, stated he does not remember inviting President Georgi Parvanov to take on the post of Prime Minister.

Stanishev offered the statement Friday before parliamentary reporters in the aftermath of Parvanov making the surprising revelation in an interview for the bTV morning show.

During his appearance, the President, who was the BSP leader until being elected for his first term, said that in 2005 Stanishev invited him to become Prime Minister.

(Sergey Stanishev was PM of Bulgaria between 2005 and 2009, leading the Three-Party Coalition cabinet.)

Parvanov pointed out he tells the story in public for the very first time in response to a question of the TV host, asking if he would remain in politics and if he has ambitions to become PM.

Stanishev, on his part, reminded that as early as April, 2005, at the BSP Congress, he had declared that if the party wins the elections, he would assume full responsibility, including leading the cabinet.

The ex PM pointed out his many talks in February and March of the same year with political experts, observers and fellow party members about who would be the best BSP candidate to become Premier, but has no recollection of Parvanov’s name ever been mentioned.

When asked if he wants to say the President is lying, Stanishev replied: “I did not say such thing.”
