Over 8 000 trees have been rescued from felling in 2009 due to the use of recycled paper in Sofia.

Recycling of paper had also resulted in the use of less energy and drinking water, according to data from businesses, citizens and retail stores, announced Saturday by Environment Minister, Nona Karadzhova.

The Minister took part in the celebration of World Environment Day, held in Sofia’s “South Park.”

Karadzhova said the results show Bulgarians have now learned that they need to recycle.

Recycling of plastic packaging has further led to lowering carbon dioxide emissions by 12 000 tons and 15 000 tons lower use of petroleum.

Glass recycling has saved 10 000 tons of natural resources.

Despite the optimistic results, the Minister pointed out that much more needs to be done, adding people in the country are more disciplined and recycle more than Sofia’s residents. She asked everyone to be unwavering and undertake actions against those who pollute the environment.

Karadzhova said the cabinet is going to strictly reinforce steep fines for violators and announced the American Ambassador is assisting the experts from her Ministry in creating a system for community service for people who do not obey public order rules.

The Sofia Mayor, Yordanka Fandakova, who was also present, confirmed fines are a great tool to improve the attitude of those who pollute Sofia, saying the City Hall is continuing to monitor and penalize people who throw trash, especially cigarette butts on city streets.

Fandakova further announced the City Hall is ready to ban the use of plastic bags but warned it would be a lengthy process.
