The Office of Bulgaria's Socialist President, Georgi Parvanov and Members of the Parliament from the opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) demand explanations from Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, about his Sofia talks last week with CIA Director, Leon Panetta.

They want to know if Borisov had discussed with CIA an eventual political project of Parvanov, as Bulgaria's daily “Trud” (Labor) writes. The article further quotes the Director of the US National Clandestine Service, Michael Sulick, telling Borisov: "You are the future, tell us how can we assist you."

The Presidential Chief of Staff, Gen. Nikolay Kolev, has sent a letter to his counterpart from Borisov's Office, Rumyana Bachvarova, asking if the conversation had indeed happened and details from it, voicing surprise Bulgaria's internal politics have been discussed with the CIA.

The cabinet's press center confirms receipt of the letter, adding Bachvarova had answered the questions, firmly rejecting reports that the President had been a topic of discussion between Borisov and Panetta.

The same questions were posed by the BSP MPs, Rumen Petkov (former Interior Minister), and Petar Korumbashev.

Petkov commented for reporters that it is highly unlikely the CIA Director would get tangled in political discussions, saying the US do not have such practice and topics like this one would be insulting for them.

“I hope this publication is a mistake, otherwise it is obvious someone is afraid of Parvanov's shadow and materializes their nightmares in talks with key international factors,” Petkov, who is known for his close ties with Parvanov, is quoted saying.
