Bulgaria's National Health Insurance Fund (NZOK) has BGN 800 M in its bank account as of March 31, 2010, announced Friday the Bulgarian Health Minister, Anna-Maria Borisova.
“NZOK is in charge of the management of these funds which must be spend only on health insurance,” explained Friday the health minister.
“This amount of money is scandalous,” declared during parliament's Friday sitting the MP from the Bulgarian Socialist party Mihail Mikov, adding that in February the country's ex Health Minister, who was removed over charges of concluding unfavorable for the state deals, announce that the available NZOK funds for December 2009 were BGN 860 M.
Mikov pointed out that during the first quarter of 2010 an additional BGN 41 M have been gathered from health insurance money taxes.
“Where does the money of Bulgarian taxpayers go?” asked Mikov Friday.
Anna-Maria Borisova responded by saying that part of the funds have been used to pay outstanding debts to hospitals and doctors throughout the country.
The Health Ministry has already outlined its priorities for 2010, including the introduction of a national health card, boosting pre-hospital care and improving Bulgaria’s emergency medical help.
One of the Ministry’s main goals will be to update the number and the prices for the various medical services in Bulgaria.
Borisova declared Thursday that 270 of the 400 functioning hospitals in Bulgaria will be restructred and turned into post treatment centers.
