EKATERINA MIHAILOVA (UDF LEADER): `THE NEW CABINET IS A WEIRD MIXTURE`

`According to me the presence of emblematic figures from the Bulgarian Socialists Party, occupying key positions in the new cabinet, is significant. No matter how hard the socialists try to keep distance from what the new cabinet is, I think that its composition shows that we will have a centralistic and even a slightly leftist government. But we wait and see its program. I am only commenting on the members because there is no program presented and the personalities in the cabinet form a really weird “mixture”. Actually, what we have is leftist-oriented announcements, a program with rightist elements, after that a coalition with the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, which has a liberal program, and finally, the Bulgarian Socialists Party. Obviously, chaos still reigns. I have the feeling that this weird mixture has been prepared since the very beginning. Still in the beginning of the negotiations on the coalition government we had the feeling that under a coalition we had to joint efforts with the Socialists party. In this very moment the only opposition to the government is the Union of Democratic Forces. Having a ruling party and an opposition party is normal. But having all the parties ruling is not. This would mean sapping the roots of democratic society. The parliamentary group of the UtDF will make its decision on the way it will vote on the new government on Monday. This cabinet will have our support on the priority matters for Bulgaria, i.e. membership in the EU and in NATO, market economy, and stability of the state. But we will be a rightist opposition with a clear stand`.
