OPPOSITION LEADER SEES COALITION AGREEMENT AS "BARGAIN"

Reported by Bulgarian National radio

[Announcer] During her visit to Plovdiv, ODS [United of Democratic Forces] leader Ekaterina Mikhaylova commented on the coalition agreement between the SND [Simeon II National Movement] and the DPS [Rights and Freedoms Movement]. In Plovdiv, Mikhaylova is attending a seminar of the Association of Democratic Municipalities on local self-government.

[Mikhaylova] I regard this agreement as a bargain that was made at the very end of the negotiations. We know that the DPS demands that it gets Kurdzhali [the post of regional governor of Kurdzhali]. I think that the agreement represents a bargain between Sofia and Kurdzhali. What I find surprising is that the post of governor of the biggest town in Bulgaria, the capital of Bulgaria, has been given to a representative of the DPS. Although the latest events in Bulgaria have been shrouded in secrecy, the truth is emerging. On the other hand, I would like to note that the actions of the SDS [Union of Democratic Forces] and the warnings that we issued to the SND that it might be used and blackmailed by the DPS have apparently produced some results, because we see that the DPS finally made concessions during the coalition talks. They failed to completely twist the arms of the SND.
