Astrologer Emil Leshtanski will be tried for giving misleading and wrongful information which led to massive evacuation of a Bulgarian city in April 2009.
This has been announced Wednesday by Deputy Judge of the Haskovo regional court Daniela Nikolova, as cited by BTA.
Several days before Easter 2009, Leshtanski wrongly predicted a devastating earthquake in the region of the Bulgarian city of Haskovo which drew many people out of their houses, spending the night on the street, and bringing record-high profits to local insurance companies.
Leshtanki will be put on trial on May 17, and if found guilty he may be sentenced to up to two years in prison.
However, since Leshtanki has no criminal record, he is likely to receive just an administrative fine in the range of BGN 500-5000.
After wrongly predicting an earthquake of a 6.0-magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale in Haskovo at exactly 4 am on April 19 2009, Leshtanksi was quick to apologize for wreaking havoc and throwing Haskovo's residents into panic.
Yet, his apology was deemed insufficient and a local businessman even threatened to sue him for deliberately lying to the people.
"I am not buying this," Tinko Garev said after hearing Leshtanski apologize. " I would be inclined to forgive him only if I see him bearing a placard saying: "I am a swindler".
