Bulgarian Gang Accused of 50 Million Pound Welfare Fraud in UK
An organized criminal group comprising Bulgarian citizens has been implicated in what authorities describe as the largest welfare fraud scheme in the legal history of Great Britain
Two high-ranking Bulgarian military officers have been sentenced to ten years each over embezzlement of army assets.
The news was broken by the Spokesperson of the Sofia Regional Military Prosecutor’s Office, Elin Aleksov.
Aleksov said that Borislav Boychev and Noli Angelov, former members of the General Staff of the Bulgarian Army, were sentenced several days ago for stealing assets worth BGN 2,199 M in 1997-1998. The sentence can be appealed.
The Sofia Military Prosecutor’s Office has announced that a total of 45 sentences were issued in 2009. A total of 99 officers have been sentenced for violations including 25 officers from the Interior Ministry, 73 from the Defense Ministry, and 1 from the National Security Service.
Aleksov pointed out the case of the former officer of the Unit for Combating Organized Crime (GDBOP), Veselin Velinov, who got sentenced in 2009 for revealing classified information.
The Chair of the Sofia Regional Military Prosecutor’s Office, Spas Iliev, announced that the five-fold investigation into the blasts in the Chelopechene Military Storage Facility which shook the Bulgarian capital Sofia on July 3, 2008, has not been completed yet. The prosecutors are investigating all possible scenarios including arson.
The military prosecutors are also investigating the purchase of 310 apartments for the army for about BGN 36 M during the term of former Defense Minister Nikolay Tsonev (2008-2009).
They are also inspecting the work of Kalin Nikolov, head of the Sports Directorate of the Defense Ministry. Nikolov’s institution paid BGN 5 M for the construction of three playgrounds and the repair of a fourth.
