The secular bloc Iraqiya of former Prime Minister Iyad Allawi has won the most seats in Iraq’s Parliamentary Elections which took place on March 7, 2010.
Official results released Friday showed that Allawi’s Iraqiya won 91 seats in the 325-member Council of Representatives. The State of Law Alliance of current PM Nuri al-Maliki won 89 seats.
The Iraqi National Alliance, a coalition led by Shiite religious groups, is third with 70 seats.
The coalition of the two leading parties of the autonomous Kurdistan region in Northern Iraq, Kurdistania, won 43 seats.
Iyad Allawi will have the mandate to form a government for which he needs to put together a coalition commanding at least 163 MP seats. If he fails to form a cabinet within 30 days, the mandate will be passed by the Iraqi President to another of the parliamentary parties.
