BULGARIA: NUCLEAR PLANT REPORTS "RAPID" PRODUCTION GROWTH IN FIRST SIX MONTHS

Vratsa, northwestern Bulgaria, 20 July: The Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant reports a rapid growth of production in the first half of 2001. It generated 10,161,483 MW of nuclear electricity, exceeding the target by 5.9 per cent. The generation was 9.1 per cent up from the level in the like period of 2000. The production cost of electricity was decreased by 10.53 per cent. In January-June 2001, Kozloduy's operating income totalled 321,829,000 leva, up 11.34 per cent from projections. The 258,817,000 leva expenditures economized 13,433,000 leva on projections. The 43,762,000 leva spent on implementation of the investment programme represented 52.55 per cent of the planned own investment expenditures for the year. The power plant complies strictly with the international standards and requirements for safe operation.

All period scheduled maintenance of Units One, Two and Six has been carried out, together with technical and technological improvements for enhancement of their nuclear and operational safety. The 1,000 MW Unit Six was brought back on stream on Friday [20 July] after scheduled annual maintenance and refuelling. Before the end of the day, its power is expected to reach 700 MW. The other 1,000 MW unit, Five, is starting to be shut down Friday for scheduled annual maintenance and refuelling, the N-plant said in a press release.
