The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences has confirmed that it will soon mount elections for new heads of all its institutes.

The BAS General Assembly, the Academy's governing body, has been meeting over several days to work on plans for reform of the institution.

The current Institute Directors have not been removed from their posts, and the date for the elections has not yet been announced. A set of election rules has, however, been prepared and approved.

According to the academy leadership, the new research units will have the right to choose who should manage them.

The Assembly has also been examining a complete restructuring of the BAS institutes, as part of its overall reform program.

Reforms were supposed to be in place at the end of January, but the process has been delayed. Management has proposed that the current 69 departments should be cut to 42, but their plan awaits Assembly approval.

The range of scientific studies will be grouped in nine areas, not necessarily according to disciplines. Once approved, the plan will disclose which departments are to be merged or axed.

Again as part of the administrative and academic reforms, BAS have also decided to create a research university, which would educate in Bachelors and Masters degrees. The academy has the authority to issue diplomas to doctoral students, who may number up to 700 each year.

A recent poll carried out by the National Center for Study of Public Opinion (NZIOM), showed overwhelming support for BAS, with 91% of the respondents believing it should continue to exist, but with extensive reforms, with the number of its institutes needing to be reduced and their work optimized.
