All the rivers in the Eastern Rhodopi mountains in South Bulgaria currently have a critically high water level after heavy rains in the region.

Some of the reservoirs in the River ‘Arda’ cascade are currently overflowing, with the situation at the ‘Studen Kladenets’ reservoir the most critical, with an inflow rate of 1 100 cubic meters of water per second.

3 of the 9 emptying valves have been opened to reduce the amount of incoming water in to the local hydro facility at the Studen Kladenets dam . The ‘Ivaylovgrad’ reservoir has also been overflowing for 3 days.

Heavy rain is expected again on Tuesday night which will increase the serious flooding possibility even further. In recent days buildings in the Southern city of Kardzhali have had their basements flooded and many people have complained of sanitation problems.
