96 000 TONS OF BARLEY SOLD TO THE MIDDLE EAST

Bulgaria has sold 96,000 tons of barley from the new crop to the Middle East at $85-$92 per ton. The forecast for the total exports is up to 200,000 tons, traders and analysts said on Wednesday. Israel, Saudi Arabia and Syria are among the future destinations. Another 20,000-30,000 tons will be exported to Romania. According to a leading farm analyst export demand rose due to the good quality of Bulgarian barley this year and competitive prices. `Total exports in 2001/2002 (July-June) may reach 200,000 tons`, he told Reuters. Bulgaria exported only about 20,000 tons of barley annually in previous years but a severe drought in 2000 damaged large amounts of grain in Eastern Europe and boosted demand for Bulgarian barley.
