The Bulgarian Ministers of Environment and Defense have been pelted with eggs by angry protesters in the town of Stara Zagora.
Minister of Environment and Water Nona Karadzhova and Minister of Defense Nikolay Mladenov had been attending a meeting with the local authorities at the headquarters of the Stara Zagora regional directorate.
About 200 local protesters had waited for almost an hour to try to find out how long their town would remain polluted with airborne gases.
As the Ministers left the building, they were surrounded by the residents, who handed them a statement containing their complaints and demands.
"There is a problem with air pollution in the city, and that is why we're here," said Defense Minister Mladenov.
"I stated at our meeting at the regional administration that we are ready to begin public monitoring of the Zmeyovo polygon, because it is my responsibility. I do not know where that gas comes from," admitted the Defense Minister.
Both ministers have pledged to respond in writing to the issues raised by the local residents.
However, tensions escalated among the protesters, some wearing masks over their mouths and shouting "Murderers", "Resignations" and "Mafia".
Several of them started throwing eggs at the ministers. An egg crashed a meter away from Nona Karadjova, hitting the door of the regional government office, and one protester even spat on Nikolay Mladenov.
