Tanks Rescue People from Blizzard in Hungary
Military tanks were mobilized to help people trapped after massive snowfall blocked scores of vehicles on Hungary's roads.
Roads in Bulgaria are reported wet and icy at certain locations, after the Saturday winter storm bringing heavy snow and strong winds.
The heaviest snow is reported in Eastern and Southern Bulgaria. Some villages, especially in the Burgas area, are still without electricity and/ or water, while icy roads have been blamed for numerous fender-benders.
Snow-ploughs of regional road agencies continue to clean the heavy snow form the roads in the southern parts of the country.
Several of the roads such as Burgas-Obzor, the Petrohan mountain pass, Batak-Dospat, the Rishki mountain pass, Momchilgrad-Krumovgrad and Omurtag-Kotel are still closed for heavy trucks. The road between Varna and Nessebar is closed for traffic.
There are many icy spots reported on bridges on the "Hemus" and Trakiya" highways and on many other roads all over the country with snow and ice accumulating mostly in mountain passes.
Over the last 24 hours Civil Defense teams have helped 137 vehicles stranded in the snow.
