Bulgaria: Bulgaria Science Academy Set to Shut down Inefficient Institutes Professor Sabotinov has vowed to shut down inefficient BAS institutes. Photo by BGNES

The Bulgarian Academy of Science is most likely going to close down some of its institutes, which have received the lowest assessment by EU expert who carried out a recent audit.

This has been announced by Professor Nikola Sabotinov, Director of the BAS.

The auditors’ report, which evaluates the viability and efficiency of the BAS institutes, will be presented formally on Monday.

It has been prepared by 40 experts from various European universities.

The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences has 69 permanent science institute divided in eight groups.

Professor Sabotinov stated that he was confident about the abilities of the BAS scientists. He reminded that the last reform at the Academy was carried out in the early 1990s when about 45% of the Acedemy staff was laid off.
