The Mayor of the historical Black Sea town of Nesebar has appealed to the Bulgarian state and parliament for assistance in preserving the heritage of the Old Town.
A public meeting has been held at the weekend, chaired by the Nesebar Mayor, NikolayDimitrov, and the Bulgarian Deputy Minister of Culture, Dr. Todor Chobanov, in which the Mayor suggested a concerted approach to the preservation and development of the ancient site.
The small peninsula on which present-day Nesebar is built has been inhabited for almost 3 000 years. As a unique, preserved cultural and historic subject, Nesebar is under the patronage and protection of UNESCO, which has declared it a World Heritage City.
"It is a prestigious honor for Bulgaria to have a city which is in the world treasury of living monuments,”"stated Mayor Dimitrov.
"Such a phenomenon in our country played a significant part in the election of a Bulgarian to UNESCO," he added, in a reference to the October election of Irina Bokova as Director-General of the world cultural body.
This was the stimulus for the mayor’s announcement that the preservation and development of the heritage and remains of ancient Mesembria, would be a chief priority of his municipal program.
"For two years now, the young people of our town are being educated in devotion and respect for their roots, in pride for their kinship, in our program 'I Live in Nesebar'," he continued.
"The project is highly appreciated by the world community as a guarantee that future generations will be more responsible than their predecessors in preserving the architectural and natural wealth of this piece of Bulgarian land," the Mayor concluded.
