Yordanka Fandakova, newly-elected Mayor of the Bulgarian capital Sofia, has declared she would be seeking the support of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov in her work.

Fandakova, who was elected in a landslide on Sunday, gave a news conference Sunday night thanking all of her supporters, including the voters, and the teams of the Sofia Municipality, where she was Deputy Mayor in 2005-2009, and of the Education Ministry, which she has headed since July 2009.

“We are going to continue the good government of Sofia, we will realize the projects that we have already started, and we will also be focusing on crafting long-term strategies,” Fandakova declared.

She has vowed to assume responsibility for the development of the Bulgarian capita.

In her words, in her capacity as Sofia Mayor, Fandakova is not going to demand that the government give Sofia Municipality back 50% of the income tax of the Sofia residents.

Instead, the state budget is going to co-fund any worthy and well-grounded projects initiated by the Sofia Municipality. Prime Minister Borisov has confirmed her words adding that the government could provide co-financing of more than 50% if the projects in question were well-developed.

Fandakova has not vowed any drastic changes in the municipal administration compared to the team of her predecessor Boyko Borisov.

She has made it clear that she would stand up for solving all of Sofia's problems, and that she was convinced there would not be any contradictions with Prime Minister and GERB party leader Boyko Borisov.

"I am really move by my election to the Mayor position but I also have allergies so I am not really crying right now," Fandakova joked.

"I am going to pick up the phone every time the Prime Minister calls me," she declared when asked how often she would allow Borisov to "bother" her.
