PROSECUTORS INVESTIGATE DEAL OF PLOVDIV MAYOR

`The Prosecutor`s Office will resume the check-up against Spas Garnevski, former mayor of Plovdiv, on a scandalous deal during his mandate`, `Standart` Daily published. The investigated deal is about the purchase of 45 new and 48 recycled `Volvo` buses for the municipal `Public Transport` company in 1998. Under the contract with the Belgian company `Yunker`, the town of Plovdiv had paid denominated BGN 17 M 6 months in advance of the delivery of the first bus. The state budget allotted the money with the active collaboration of Finance Minister Muravey Radev. The municipality was not paid any penalty for the delayed delivery. Former town councillors maintain that the dubious deal defrauded of more than DEM 3 M.
