Bulgaria's Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, has made clear his willingness to shut down the State National Security Agency DANS.

“If it turns out that DANS has been created to generate scandals and problems, it could be closed down. If it does not function, I am either going to shut it down, or I will have to restructure it completely, which is going to take a lot of time – something that we don’t have,” Borisov told Nova TV on Monday.

Borisov’s statement is regarding his accusations that in October 2008 his predecessor Sergey Stanishev hid a DANS report incriminating top officials with corruption and abuses, and that Stanishev had created DANS (which came into existence on January 1, 2008) as a kind of “political police”. These allegations have been denied by Stanishev and the Bulgarian Socialist Party.

Another case that recently made DANS notorious is the so called “Galeria” case which involved spying on leading Bulgarian journalists.

Borisov has expressed his hopes that the Prosecutor’s Office would manage to investigate successfully the case with the missing report in question, and to stop the leaking of intelligence information from the Bulgarian FBI.
