Bulgaria Grapples with Soaring Corruption Rates: New Report Reveals Shocking Data
Corruption in Bulgaria has soared to its third highest peak in history, according to a recent report by the Center for the Study of Democracy
Bulgaria’s former Prime Minister, Sergey Stanishev, has declared that the Prosecutor’s Office had already investigated the secret intelligence report he allegedly abused.
Stanishev declared in the northwest town of Byala Slatina Sunday that he was interested in an investigation of the report in question in order to prove that he had not covered up any alleged violations.
He said it was interesting why former DANS agent Aleksei Petrov, who gave the report to Borisov on Friday, had kept a copy of it.
“As a former agent, Petrov must be aware that all of the Agency’s reports have been investigated by the prosecutors. I have received hundreds of reports from DANS. The data provided in the one in question has been investigated, and the Prosecutor’s Office has a conclusion on it. It is naïve to think that I have hidden it, or that I have given it to somebody in order to protect them. In the very least, it is very simple to make a photo copy,” Stanishev said as quoted by the Bulgarian National Radio.
In his words, the governing GERB party of Prime Minister Borisov was interested in blowing the report story out of proportion in order to distract the Bulgarian public opinion from the economic and social problems of the country.
Stanishev also said former DANS agent Aleksei Petrov had his own political interests, which had to do with conducting consistent actions to destroy the State National Security Agency.
In his words, DANS had been formed to protect Bulgaria's national security, and to fight high-level crimes, and it was absurd to term it "political police".
