Bulgaria’s Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, reiterated Friday the words of Finance Minister, Simeon Djankov, that the state budget could not afford to give out Christmas salaries.
Bulgaria’s Finance Ministry already announced that there would be no Christmas bonuses for state employees and retirees, known in Bulgaria as the “13th salary” or “13th pension” respectively, at the end of 2009 because of the emerging budget deficit.
“We said it very loud and clear that there is simply no money,” Borisov said Friday in Parliament while answering questions of the MPs. He pointed out that the previous government had promised money to everyone even though it was not available.
Borisov pointed as an example the allocation of BGN 800 000 that he signed Thursday for the repair of the roads in the southwest city of Blagoevgrad saying the funds had been promised by previous government.
The Prime Minister pointed out the government had to cancel the deal for the purchase of two corvettes from France because of the lack of funds, and reminded that the payments for the helicopters, frigates, and airplane negotiated by the previous government with foreign firms were yet to paid.
“Right now we have a very good financial discipline, and that is why we get praises from Brussels. The new government wants to achieve a balanced budget in order to prove that it can preserve taxpayers’ money, and prevent the state from going bankrupt,” the Prime Minister said.
