Bulgaria’s former Transport Minister, Petar Mutafchiev, has refuted the claims of his successor, Alexander Tsvetkov, that his administration has left the state-owned railways in a disastrous condition.

Mutafchiev said that when he assumed the Transport Minister position in 2005, the BDZ company had short-term debts amounting to BGN 300 M, whereas today they were BGN 150 M. He also said that in 2006 the former government increased the salaries of the railway workers by 10%.

The former Minister also rejected the claims of Tsvetkov that the previous administration had squandered the state subsidies for the railway companies in order to hinder the work of the new government.

Mutafchiev said the new administration had no plan for anti-crisis measures and that is why it wanted to put the blame for the crisis of the railway companies on the former government.

He also refuted any claims of a scam over the purchase of railway cars. In his words, a new sleeping car costs EUR 2 M, whereas the recycled cars that his team bought were BGN 500 000 each.

Mutafchiev believes the new team at the Ministry should continue executing his health plan for the railways including the sale of non-operational property, and selling over 7 000 tons of old railway cars for scrap to raise funds.
