The first issue of the new Republika daily, with a print run of 20,000, came out on Saturday [14 July]. Its publisher, Europress, is the same that published the Socialist Duma daily which stopped coming out recently. The first issue carries a page in Turkish. Editor-in-Chief Plamen Enchev said it will appear once a week, while a page headlined Monarchy will appear daily. Republika is a centre-left independent daily with three main lines of content: republican, national patriotic and socially committed. The news will be uncensored and analysis and comments will not show corporate bias, Enchev said. The Turkish-language page is intended for ethnic Turks, who want to read in their mother tongue. Those stories will be about the regions with a large population of ethnic Turks. The first issue writes about Turkish investment in Bulgaria, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms and an all-Turkish village in the southern Kurdzhali Region. The last page, entitled Monarchy, will be printed upside down so that the two page titles, Republic and Monarchy, are one above the other in the folded newspaper. Written in a tongue-in-cheek style, it will form a counterpoint to the rest of the content, Enchev said. The first issue frontpages best wishes from President Petur Stoyanov and Simeon II, referred to as the former king.
