There is no room for alarm regarding a possible epidemic of the swine flue (A H1N1) virus in Bulgaria.
The statement was made Sunday by Bulgaria’s Health Minister, Bozhidar Nanev, who spoke in an interview for the TV channel Nova Televizia.
Bulgarians infected by the virus have very light symptoms, they endure the disease well and the complications are few.
Currently they are 88 registered swine flue cases in Bulgaria, Nanev informed. Regarding the first swine flu death in the country, the Minister said the man had many other illnesses and weakened immune system, including being a drug addict, and for this reason it could not be definitely confirmed the A H1N1 virus was the real cause of death.
Bulgaria does not face a serious threat from the swine flu and there is no danger of epidemic and no need of drastic measures on the part of the State, Nanev reiterated.
The Minister further reported those who have been in touch with the deceased are in good health and are all undergoing prophylactic therapy, adding the so-called ordinary flu viruses that pass through the country each year have an average mortality rate of 2 000 people annually.
Despite the fact that there is no serious swine flu threat at the moment in Bulgaria and around the world, the virus should not be overlooked, Nanev said, adding the media must refrain from seeking sensational news and from spreading panic among the population.
