Egypt's Minister of Culture, Faruq Hosni, has declared that he had lost the elections for UNESCO Director General because of the pressure exerted by "Zionists" and the USA.

Late Tuesday night Hosni lost to Bulgaria's Irina Bokova with 31 vs. 27 votes in the fifth round of the elections in the UNESCO headquarters in Paris.

Upon his arrival in the Egyptian capital Cairo, Hosni has made state that the US representative in UNESCO had mobilized all available means in order to prevent him from getting elected to head the organization.

Hosni has been a controversial candidate, opposed by Israel because of his alleged anti-Semitic statements in 2008 when he said he would burn any books in Hebrew that he might find in Egyptian libraries.

Bulgaria's Bokova has become the first woman and the first Eastern European to head UNESCO.
