Bulgaria's Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has described the election of former Bulgarian Foreign Minister Irina Bokova for leader of UN cultural and scientific organisation UNESCO as a recognition for the whole country.
"For me Irina Bokova's election is a recognition for Bulgaria. As a government we did our best to support her nomination. I do hope that Mrs Bokova will appreciate this," Boyko Borisov, head of the country's new center-right government, told the Bulgarian National Radio.
Irina Bokova, member of the Bulgarian Socialist Party and ambassador to Paris, beat the favourite, Egyptian Culture Minister Faruq Hosni, whose candidacy had been clouded by allegations of anti-Semitism.
It took five days and five rounds of voting to choose the new UNESCO head.
