Bulgaria's Ambassador to France, Irina Bokova, is the first representative of Eastern Europe to head UNESCO.

Bokova defeated Tuesday in Paris her Egyptian competitor, Faruq Hosni, with 31 vs. 27 votes in what has been the most widely publicized and most contested race for the UNESCO top job since its founding as one of the UN structures in 1945.

In addition to being the first Eastern European to head UNESCO, Bokova has become the first woman, and the fifth European to do so.

Previous Europeans who were UNESCO Directors General came from the UK, Italy, France, and Spain.

Bokova is the tenth head of UNESCO since its establishment in 1945.
