Bulgaria's Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, has welcomed the election of the Bulgarian candidate, Irina Bokova, as head of UNESCO.

"This is a huge recognition for Bulgaria," Borisov said Tuesday night after Bokova beat her Egyptian competitor for the position.

Bokova is the first woman to head UNESCO after she was elected with 31 votes vs. 27 for her competitor.
