Bulgarian UNESCO chief candidate Irina Bokova has stated that Bulgaria should create a regional heritage center.

Bokova stated that the creation of a center in Bulgaria concentrating on folklore, songs, dances, traditions and everything that is related to national identity will be part of her strategy in her work if she becomes the head of UNESCO.

She also added that this will be a new area of international cooperation in which Bulgaria has many specialists. This refers to the creation of such a regional center for Central and Eastern Europe in Bulgaria.

In May Bokova also confirmed that Bulgaria will propose that ‘The Valley of the Thracian Kings' should be listed by UNESCO as a world heritage site.

Bokova said that "Bulgaria's efforts should concentrate on promoting its national heritage, and the Valley is an important part of this."

She is set to face off with controversial Egyptian candidate Faruq Hosni later on Tuesday in a final round of voting.

In a secret fourth ballot held late Monday Bokova is reported to have received exactly the same number of votes as Hosni. The vote has been clouded by Hosni making alleged anti-Jewish comments.

The fifth and final vote is Tuesday. If the candidates are still tied then, the winner will be picked in a draw, UNESCO said.
