The Bulgarian nominee for UNESCO director general remained in the competition with only one other runner, Faruq Hosni.

This became clear Monday evening after a the Ecuador contestant, Ivonne Baki quit the competition, BGNES reported.

The vote for UNESCO director general headed to a third round on Saturday after Egypt's controversial candidate for UNESCO director general failed to win an absolute majority in a ballot of world envoys on Friday.

Envoys to the United Nations cultural organization started voting Thursday for a successor to Japan's Koichiro Matsuura as director general, with the Faruq Hosni, Egypt's Culture Minister for 22 years, seen as the frontrunner.

European Commissioner for External Relations Benita Ferrero-Waldner withdrew from her run for the post on Sunday.

This decision left three main contenders - the Egyptian candidate, Faruq Hosni, who enjoys a comfortable lead over the Bulgarian nominee, current Ambassador to France, Irina Bokova, and Ecuador's Ivonne Baki.

Benin, Lithuania, the Russian Federation and the United Republic of Tanzania withdrew their candidates before the third round.

Now the contestants are only two - Bulgarian ex-Foreign Minister and current Ambassador to France Irina Bokova, and Egypt's Culture Minister, Faruq Hosni.
