Bulgaria's President, Georgi Parvanov, declared Friday he would support unpopular measures if they are justifiable.
Parvanov spoke during the discussion of the economic plan, presented by the Presidential Institution, and prepared by business experts.
The plan, even before its official presentation, stirred heated arguments and criticism, such as the Finance Minister, Simeon Djankov's qualification of the proposal to eliminate the flat tax as "imbecile."
Parvanov replied once more Friday, saying it was the cabinet's business and decision to use the plan or parts of it, because the main goal is to trigger a discussion and consolidate the Bulgarian position regarding the crisis. He pointed out the plan was not the exact reflection of his own firm position on the matter.
The President further declared that the discussion surrounding his plan, most likely, led to the cabinet's speedy announcement of their own anti-crisis package.
Parvanov criticized the country's institutions and the science sector for their slow reaction to the crisis as well as the cabinet's plan for undermining the social element.
