Bulgaria's capital celebrates Thursday St Sofia Day - the date when the Orthodox world pays homage to the Holy Martyrs Sofia and her three daughters Faith, Hope and Love.

The flag of the capital was hoisted at an official ceremony and a liturgy was held in front of St. Sofia church.

The ceremony was attended by President, Georgi Paranov, Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, the acting Mayor of Sofia, Minko Gerdzhikov, the Speaker of the Parliament, Tsetska Tsacheva, Members of the Parliament, and foreign Ambassadors to Sofia.

The liturgy was served by Bulgaria's Patriarch Maxim.

"Sofia not only has a rich past, it has a bright European future and all chances to become one of the most peaceful and welcoming EU capitals. Just in the course of one year we will open 16 new kindergarten facilities, repave thousands of kilometers of streets and boulevards. This city will never be buried in trash again," Gerdzhikov said.

In 1992 Sofia municipal council selected this date for Sofia's Day at the proposal of the then mayor.

Between 1979 and 1992 Sofia's Day was marked on April 3, the day when Sofia was pronounced Bulgaria's capital back in 1879.
