Eyewitnesses of the sinking of the boat that went udnerwater during a sightseeing tour of Macedonia's Ohrid Lake said that everything happened very quickly.

"It was not immediately clear why the boat sunk. Eyewitnesses said that everything happened very quickly," police spokesman Ivo Kotevski announced.

At least 12 people drowned when a boat sunk during a sightseeing tour of Macedonia's Ohrid Lake, according to local police.

Private A1 TV said that 50 tourists from Bulgaria were on the boat that was on travelling from the town of Ohrid to a medieval monastery complex, Sveti Naum (St. Naum).

Witnesses told A1 TV that the boat was about 200 yards away from the shore and sunk quickly, splitting in two.

A total of 53 people were pulled from the water and they were transferred to the nearest hotel. It is not clear whether that figure includes the confirmed dead. Only one passenger was transferred to the Ohrid hospital.
