Serous meningitis is spreadingin the region of Kurdjali, Tanya Kamenova, chief expert at the Health Ministry, said on Thursday following an epidemiological survey. Twenty-nine children in 13 towns and villages were infected between June 12 and July 12. The latest three cases date back to Thursday. Meningitis is caused by enteroviruses, typical for this season. The infected children have a light form of the disease, eight of them have already been discharged from hospital, said Dr. Rachev of the Sofia Infectious Disease Clinics. The children have been hospitalised in separate rooms at the children`s infectious ward of the Kurdjali hospital. For the time being, no other measures will be taken. According to Kamenova, no epidemic will be declared and the infection will die out by the end of August. Cases of meningitis were registered in other areas of the country as well in the past month but doctors are not sure whether it is a case of viral or bacterial meningitis.
