Bulgaria's Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, extended to his Greek counterpart Kostas Karamanlis an offer to help with the wild fires raging near the capital Athens.

The information was reported Sunday by the cabinet's press center.

Bulgaria's Foreign Ministry and the Bulgarian Embassy in Athens are fully prepared to offer assistance and have contacted the Greek Embassy in Sofia.

"We are ready to help with equipment, medications and technical and medical teams in case the Greek side tells us they need such help," Borisov declared.

The wildfires began Saturday near Athens and quickly engulfed huge territories northeast of the capital among fears they would soon reach the city.

Greek authorities have declared emergency situation.
