Over 85 000 people have visited the "Treasures of the Bulgarian Icons" exhibition in the French capital Paris.
This was announced Saturday by Bulgaria's Culture Ministry, which points out that exhibit on display in the museum temple Sainte-Chapelle in the medieval castle Chateau de Vincennes had been a great success so far.
The Bulgarian Icons exhibition is dedicated to the 130th year since the establishing of diplomatic relations between Bulgaria and France. It was opened on May 11, 2009, the Day of St. Cyril and St. Methodius, who are patrons of Europe.
It contains 80 masterpieces of Bulgarian iconographic art, medieval manuscripts and church plates.
The icons exhibition will remain at Sainte-Chapelle de Vincennes until August 31, 2009, and the organizers believe that the number of visitors may exceed 100 000.
The exhibit is organized by the Bulgarian Culture Ministry, the Bulgarian National Arts Gallery, the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, the French Ministry of Culture and Communication, the French Center for National Monuments, and Institut Francais in Sofia.
The event has been advertised widely in the public transport in Paris. It was the first exhibit at the Holy Chapel at the Castle of Vincennes after it was closed for repair works for two years.
A recent article in Monde newspaper described the exhibit of Bulgarian icons as exceptional and emphasized that it showed the specificity of Bulgarian Christian culture compared to that of Christian Byzantium.
