The old town of Nessebar is a unique cultural and natural heritage site and will not be deleted from the UNESCO World Heritage list, as was recently feared.
The announcement came after Tadamichi Yamamoto, the Permanent Delegate of Japan to UNESCO met with Bulgarian UNESCO representative Irina Bokova after taking a three hour guided tour of the old town.
Yamamoto stated that "Nessebar has an unrivaled combination of many important elements that attract people. It is essential that its historical heritage is protected, the town is unique."
In May Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov suggested that Nessebar's status as a UNESCO World Heritage site would be canceled.
"There is a real risk for the town of Nessebar to be excluded from UNESCO World Heritage list as a result of over development," warned Parvanov.
