The former Director of Bulgaria's natural gas monopoly Bulgargaz Vasil Filipov has predicted Friday that a new Russian gas crisis is looming.

Filipov stated that that Russia will soon struggle to meet the extraction and transport demands to fulfill its obligations to Europe.

In an interview for "Hello, Bulgaria!" on Nova Televizia, he explained further that the entire western border of Russia is tense and that Russia will find an excuse to stop supplies. "We will immediately be affected because with the reduction in supplies to the Ukraine, Bulgaria is the first to suffer," added Filipov.

Meanwhile, Filipov concluded that the new Bulgarian government must read all of the old energy contracts in detail and to come up with investment for new energy projects. He added that "Bulgarian authorities have continually abused the privatization process, including in the energy sector."

Filipov was Executive Director of Bulgargaz in 1997-1998 when Bulgaria negotiated Russian gas supplies in a contract with Russian energy monopoly Gazprom.
