A week of torrential rain has caused widespread flooding and heavy loss of life in western China. At least 60 people are reported to have been killed, thousands have been made homeless, and road, rail and telephone links have been severely damaged. Power supplies have been interrupted and thousands of acres of farmland is flooded. Local officials in Shaanxi province say more than 100 people are missing. Reports from Shaanxi and Sichuan provinces say the flooding is of a scale rarely seen in a century.
