US President Barack Obama has sent a congratulatory letter to Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov on the fifth anniversary of Bulgaria's accession to NATO.

US Ambassador Nancy McEldowney handed Parvanov the letter after receiving the highest Stara Planina order in an official ceremony on Thursday.

Obama stated; "Celebrating a decade of NATO's enlargement we give our credit to the valiant leadership on the most recent members of the Alliance and to the citizens that have supported their efforts."

"The contribution of Bulgaria to NATO operations and its commitment to the core values of our Alliance confirm the undergoing transformation of NATO and prove the lasting effect of its enlargement," he added.
