Bulgaria's President, Georgi Parvanov, awarded Thursday the outgoing US Ambassador, Nancy McEldowney, with the highest Stara Planina order.
McEldowney receives the order for her exceptional contributions to the development of the relations between the two countries.
"Nancy McEldowney came with a flying start in Bulgaria and in just less than one year realized numerous active contacts and did a tremendous amount of work," Parvanov said at the official ceremony, adding that in the 106 years of bi-lateral diplomatic relations, Bulgaria and the US are now in the apogee of their contacts as strategic partners and have an unprecedented positive dialogue.
Parvanov pointed out the two countries must strive to maintain this positive trend regardless of the type of government Bulgaria has and will have.
Nancy McEldowney stated she accepted the order with humility and hope; humility because one year is a very short term and hope because many of the projects the two countries began couldn't be halted now.
The Ambassador pointed out the importance of the mutual collaboration in the defense sector and in establishing energy security, of trade and business partnerships to help keep a stable job market and alleviate the effects of the global crisis.
